What kind of understanding do we have of our own place in the universe? What are the possibilities for intelligent life elsewhere in the universe?
When will we be capable of space travels faster and further into the solar system and galaxy? What kind of distances do our solar system, our galaxy and the universe offer, really? Are there UFOs out there?
The existence of extraterrestrial life has been a topic of scientific investigation for a century or more, and we are now routinely exploring other planets and moons in our solar system for signs of primitive life. We also continuously monitor incoming electromagnetic radiation in the form of light, radio waves and so on, as possible signs of intelligent life being broadcast from a distant solar system. So far, we have yet to find any convincing evidence of extraterrestrial life. But we keep looking! Extraterrestrial life has been the source of wonder and fear for centuries and has become part of mythological, philosophical, spiritual, and religious narratives around the world. Variants of “alien” are a natural part of science fiction literature, films, cartoons, and a standard starting point for reflecting on human society and behavior.

FILM: The festival offers a film classic as a prelude to this conversation. We are showing 2001: A Space Odyssey in the East End auditorium, The Garden, Ryfylkegt. 11. The film will be shown on Thursday, May 11th. There will be a preliminary talk by Kristin Aalen together with Guttorm Andreassen, who has written a thesis on Stanley Kubrick’s classic from 1068. There will also be an informal beer and film talk in The Garden afterwards.
Hva slags forståelse har vi av vår egen plass i universet? Hva er mulighetene for intelligent liv andre steder i universet?
Når blir vi i stand til romreiser fortere og lenger inn i solsystem og galakse? Hva slags avstander byr solsystemet vårt, galaksen vår og universet på, egentlig? Fins det UFO-er, der ute?
Eksistensen av utenomjordisk liv har vært et tema for vitenskapelig undersøkelse i et århundre eller mer, og vi utforsker nå rutinemessig andre planeter og måner i vårt solsystem etter tegn på primitivt liv. Vi overvåker også kontinuerlig innkommende elektromagnetisk stråling i form av lys, radiobølger, osv. som mulige tegn på at intelligent liv kringkastes fra et fjernt solsystem. Så langt har vi ikke funnet noen overbevisende spor etter utenomjordisk liv. Men vi fortsetter å lete! Utenomjordisk liv har vært kilden til undring og frykt i århundrer og blitt en del av mytologiske, filosofiske, åndelige og religiøse fortellinger over hele verden. Varianter av «romvesen» er en naturlig del av science fiction-litteratur, filmer, tegneserier, og et temmelig standard utgangspunkt for å reflektere over menneskelig samfunn og atferd.
